Description

Product Description This book provides a cutting-edge analysis of the ways in which higher education institutions have become more international over the past two decades. Drawing upon a range of post-foundational spatial, network, and mobilities theories, the book shifts our thinking away from linear, binary, Western accounts of internationalization to understand the complex, multi-centered and contradictory ways in which internationalization processes have played out across a wide variety of higher education landscapes worldwide. The author explores transnational student, scholar, knowledge, program and provider mobilities; the production of mobile bodies, knowledges, and identities; the significance of place in internationalization; and the crucial role that global university rankings play in reshaping the spatial landscape of higher education. Review “As an irreversible trend in today’s world, globalization drives the process of internationalization of higher education (IoHE) to be a part of international free trade system. … It provides new explanations about the multidimensionality and intersections of higher education internationalization. … the book sheds light on the phenomenon of higher education internationalization in an innovative, insightful approach. It is suitable for scholars and administrators interested in network and spatial theory, globalization, and the IoHE.” (Jing Tian and Hao Ni, Higher Education, Vol. 76, 2018) Review “Theoretically and empirically rich, this book brings novel angles of analysis to current studies of the internationalization of universities.  It provides a valuable overview of such studies and persuasively challenges conventional wisdom. Inviting us to think afresh, it sets in motion a research agenda that will revitalize the field.” (Jane Kenway, Professorial Fellow, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, Melbourne University, Australia) “Marianne Larsen ‘cleans up’ a discussion of internationalization in higher education that has become sticky with many different normative terms and ambiguous agendas. She lays down a clear-minded set of spatial guidelines for the field that can make us more effective at the global level in both scholarship and practice. Highly recommended.” (Simon Marginson, Director of the Centre for Global Higher Education at University College London, UK, and Joint Editor-in-Chief of “Higher Education”) “Larsen’s book provides an important lens of analysis to the study of internationalization by using spatial, network and mobility theories. She adroitly challenges readers to shift from a more ‘linear, deterministic, and Western-centric’ approach to a ‘multi-centered and worldwide’ frame of analysis. A critical contribution to the literature on higher education internationalization.” (Jane Knight, Adjunct Professor, Ontario Institute for Education, University of Toronto, Canada) From the Back Cover This book provides a cutting-edge analysis of the ways in which higher education institutions have become more international over the past two decades.
