In order to demonstrate the inadequacies of the communist system, the author portrays the life of Dana Munteanu in Romania from 1955 through 1989, exposing the lack of freedom, privacy, and concern for people along with threats to the persons existence under the system. He then follows the transition that began in 1989 and ended communism, showing the continued prominence of former communists in the new business community. The author encourages the involvement of the democracies of the world in assisting with the transition from communism, so that these countries can become unthreatened democracies with free market economies.
