Als Ergebnis jahrelanger Forschungsarbeit liegt in erweiterter Auflage ein Handbuch mit den Lebensläufen von 1675 führenden deutschen Kommunisten vor. Damit wird eine umfende Sicht auf das Führungskorps des deutschen Kommunismus von 1918 bis 1945 angeboten. Ein Blick in die 1675 Biographien zeigt das dramatische Schicksal dieser aktiven Kommunisten, die Zahlen belegen teilweise überraschende, aber zugleich erschreckende Fakten. Von den 1675 führenden Kommunisten kamen weit über 470, also fast jeder Dritte, auf gewaltsame Weise ums Leben. Schon nach der Gründung der KPD wurden Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht und einige ihrer Mitstreiter 1919 ermordet, später fielen Kommunisten im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg gegen Franco. Die einschneidendsten Verluste erlitt das deutsche kommunistische Führungskorps indes durch die totalitären Systeme des 20. Jahrhunderts: 256 führende Funktionäre wurden von der barbarischen -Diktatur ermordet, aber nicht weniger als 208 sind im Schreckensregime Stalins umgekommen. Die spannenden Biographien dieser Menschen sagen viel über den Weg der kommunistischen Bewegung aus. Diese Männergesellschaft (nur 163 Frauen unter 1675 Parteiführern) widerspiegelt die Wandlung des deutschen Kommunismus. Dessen Umformung ist an der wachsenden Abhängigkeit von Moskau erkennbar, dem Verlust der Autonomie, dem Verschwinden der innerparteilichen Demokratie und an der strikt durchgesetzten stalinistischen Generallinie der Partei. Noch drastischer als die Eingriffe in die Strukturen und die von Stalin befohlene Politik belegen freilich die Biographien der Funktionäre, wie sich der Kommunismus in Deutschland veränderte. Der ständige Austausch des Führungspersonals reflektiert diese Wandlung von einem radikalen Teil der Emanzipationsbewegung deutscher Arbeiter zu einer Organisation, die sich politisch und personell der Komintern und der KPdSU Stalins unterordnete.
