This book is a detailed history of Sabena, the Belgian national airline, which was formed in 1923. From the beginning, Sabena’s focus was on Europe and the African nation of the Congo, which was under Belgian rule at the time. The event that captured the imagination of the Belgian people was on February 12, 1925, when the Belgian World War 1 ace, Edmond Thieffry, and his crew took the initiative and began a flight to Leopoldville, the capital of the Belgian colony of the Congo, on a SABCA-modified W.8es. After fifty-one days of flying, they finally arrived at Leopoldville on April 3. Thus, Edmond Thieffry opened air access to the most critical route for Sabena. From that point, the Congo was Sabena’s cash cow. The carrier had other routes worldwide, but they were very much up and down in passenger numbers, depending on the economic conditions. Sabena inaugurated many new routes constantly. Its next major route was announced in April 1946, and it was the ‘Big Apple’ – New York. No European international airline could avoid New York. The city was an essential trans-Atlantic destination. Sabena performed some test flights throughout 1946 before its inaugural New York flight on June 4, 1946. Afterward, new cities such as Toronto, Mexico City, and Tokyo, among others, were in its network. All was going well until 1960. That year the Congo ousted the Belgian officials from the Congo, ceased Belgian rule in the country, and declared independence. It was the death knell for Sabena. Before the end of Belgian control in the Congo, Sabena’s earnings in and to the Congo constituted approximately 40% of the Belgian carrier’s annual revenue. The cash cow was now dead for Sabena. The ensuing forty-one years were somewhat turbulent for Sabena. The airline did perform well in some years, but mainly not. The end came for the Belgian national carrier in 2001, cruelly by the consequences of deregulation, the 911 atrocity, and financial pressures. This book tells a tale of an airline that cheated death many times and somehow managed to survive through government subsidies and pure luck. It is the story of Sabena.
