Since technology in this area is rapidly changing, the chapters will begin with an explanation of the concept (the architectures and approaches rather than specific tools). Thereafter, each chapter will proceed to a discussion of current tools and step-by-step examples that implement the concepts. These step-by-step examples are carried throughout the chapters and show the students the creation of an e-commerce site using Deerfield WebSite and Microsoft's IIS. Guidelines are also included to show how the same site would be developed using Microsoft's IIS. After the examples, end-of-chapter project sections encourage students to develop their own site and put into practice the key concepts they have learned. Database Management with Website Development Applications Database Management with Website Development Applications covers the basic database background necessary for students pursuing an Information Systems or Information Technology degree. The book takes a top-down approach where two running case studies help motivate the teaching of the basic database concepts by using a familiar and real-world context: A business going on-line. As the need to store and retrieve information on-line is presented students learn about database design, SQL, and the Entity-Relationship model. The book uses the most prevalent database tools to give students practice and experience in implementing the concepts they have learned. Students build database designs using Access and implement these designs using Oracle. For a more in-depth course or a follow on course students can then move on to building database driven web sites using HTML, XML, and ASP. This book emphasizes a practical approach to information systems, database management, and web site development. The first half of the book teaches students to: Determine the information requirements for a system; specify those requirements; and develop a relational database to store the information. The second half of the book teaches students to design a web site to interact with users; construct web pages with HTML and XML; organize information and applications for use in e-commerce sites; and develop software to support user interactions.
