About the Author SOPHIE BODY-GENDROT, political scientist, is a Professor at the University of the Sorbonne and at the Institute of Political Science. Her latest books are Les Villes américanes: Les politiques urbaines (1998) and Ville et Violence (1995). MARCO MARTINIELLO, sociologist and political scientist, is a senior research fellow at the National Fund for Scientific Research and Director of Centre d'Études de l'Ethnicité et des Migrations at the University of Liège, Belgium. He has recently published Sortir des ghettos culturels (1997) and edited Multicultural Policies and the State (1998).
