Review Reviews recent developments in the combined use of two well established technologies (FO and RO) in water desalination wastewater treatment and hydrogen production From the Back Cover Reverse osmosis (RO), Forward Osmosis (FO) and the FO/RO hybrid process have received increased attention in the last years. The benefits of the individual processes are well established but the benefits in combined use have only recently emerged. The combined process have considerable potential across a wide variety of applications including power generation, enhanced oil recovery, water treatment, fluid concentration, thermal desalination feed water softening, water substitution and desalination. Most of these applications have been currently commercialised. Reverse and Forward Osmosis: Principles, Applications aims to cover the important aspects of RO, FO and their combination in integrated systems as well as their specific and well -established applications. The book offers an overview of recent developments in the field of forward osmosis and reverse osmosis and their applications in specific areas such as water desalination, wastewater treatment, power generation and food processing. General principles, membrane module developments, membrane fouling as well as modelling, simulation and optimization of both technologies are also covered. The ultimate goal is to support the scientific community, professionals and enterprises that aspire to develop new applications, as well as to improve efficiency and sustainability of such processes. About the Author Angelo Basile, officially qualified as a Full Professor at university in the subject “Sistems, Methods and Technologies of the Chemical Engineering Processes, until 2020 was a senior researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR), wherein he developed membranes for gas purification and membrane reactors for pure hydrogen production. His prolific research works have been published in numerous papers and conference proceedings, and he has also produced various Italian (8), European (3 )and worldwide (1)patents. Basile has edited more than 60 scientific books and 60 special journal issues on membrane science and technology. He is an associate editor of various international journals (like IJHE) and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Membrane Science & Technology; and member of the editorial board of more 20 int. journals. Angelo Basile’s h-index 51, on the areas: Energy, Chem. Eng., Env. Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, (www.scopus.com – 21 March 2022). Today Basile is a R&D Manager at ECO2Energy (Rome) and Hydrogenia (Genoa), both societies under the umbrella of the European society Greeninvest; he also is offcially collaborating with the Dept. of Eng. at the University Campus Bio-medical of Rome. Alfredo Cassano, a Biologist, is senior Researcher at ITM-CNR since 2000. He has a long experience in the field of membrane science and technology with research expertise including pressure-driven membrane processes, membrane contactors and integrated membrane operations mainly applied to wastewater treatments and agro-food productions.
