Description

This critical edition presents Anthony Munday's original-spelling translation of Palmerin de Olivia, an anonymous Iberian chivalric romance first published in 1511 and conjecturally attributed to a female author. Munday (1560-1633) created his English version by working from Jean Maugin's French translation of 1546 whilst also consulting Mambrino Roseo da Fabriano's Italian rendition, rather than translating directly from the Spanish source. The work, initially published in 1588, represents a significant contribution to early modern literary translation and has been translated into Dutch, French, and Italian. This volume is part of the Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies series, offering scholars and students an authoritative text for studying Renaissance translation practices and chivalric romance literature in English.

Key Features

Anthony Munday's original-spelling translation preserves the linguistic authenticity of the 1588 English Palmerin d'Oliva text.

This critical edition examines Munday's translation methodology, which relied on Jean Maugin's French version and Mambrino Roseo da Fabriano's Italian rendition as intermediary sources.

Volume 534 in the Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies series provides scholarly apparatus for analysing early modern chivalric romance in English literature.

The edition addresses the conjectural attribution of the anonymous Iberian source text to a female author, contributing to feminist literary history scholarship.

Designed for researchers studying Renaissance translation practices, comparative literature, and the circulation of chivalric narratives across European languages during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
