Description

Visionary Animal offers a comprehensive illustrated exploration of indigenous rock art traditions spanning thousands of years across Southern Africa. This scholarly work examines how nomadic hunter-gatherers visualised the animals central to their spiritual and material lives, with particular focus on iconic subjects like the Cape eland. Author Renaud Ego presents a transformative approach to interpreting these ancient artworks, proposing that artists sought to capture and communicate the vital essence of the animals they depicted. The collection synthesises current archaeological and art historical knowledge whilst introducing innovative frameworks for understanding the symbolic and ceremonial significance of rock art in hunter-gatherer cultures. Through detailed analysis and rich illustrations, the book reveals how these visual traditions encoded complex knowledge systems and spiritual beliefs, offering readers profound insight into how indigenous peoples of Southern Africa perceived and engaged with the natural world through artistic expression.
