Description

How can the Christian tradition respond to the escalating climate crisis? In this volume from the T&T Clark Explorations in Theology, Gender and Ecology series, Henriksen examines the symbol deficit within Christian thought. While the tradition contains many symbols that identify human failure and the obstacles to progress, there is a lack of positive symbols designed to drive constructive action. This book explores how to develop a new symbolic language that can inspire people to take committed and sustained action to prevent environmental crisis. Henriksen argues that for these symbols to be effective, they must engage people on both intellectual and emotional levels. By expanding gendered sources, this work looks for ways to create a more robust theological response to the ecological challenges facing our world today.

Key Features

Examines the relationship between the global climate crisis and the current state of Christian symbolic traditions.

Identifies the gap between symbols that highlight human failure and those that motivate positive, constructive action.

Explores the potential for developing new symbols that engage both the intellect and the emotions of believers.

Part of the T&T Clark Explorations in Theology, Gender and Ecology series for academic and theological study.

Proposes ways to use expanded gendered sources to address environmental obstacles and promote sustained ecological action.
