Description

Discover the intimate correspondence between Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy and his wife Sofia Andreevna Tolstaya through this scholarly portrait spanning their remarkable life together. Lev Nikolaevich penned approximately 10,000 letters during his lifetime, with 840 addressed directly to Sofia Andreevna, while Sofia Andreevna herself wrote thousands of letters throughout her life. When Sofia Andreevna published her husband's letters to her, she notably excluded her own 644 letters to him, creating a significant gap in their documented dialogue. This absence of half their correspondence obscured the deeper meaning behind many of his comments to her and sometimes led readers to incorrect interpretations. This University of Ottawa edition restores context and understanding to one of history's most significant literary relationships, offering scholars and readers alike a more complete view of the Tolstoys' profound connection through their written words.
