Description

The Resilient Self explores how international migration re-shapes women's senses of themselves. In this work, Chien-Juh Gu uses life-history interviews and ethnographic observations to illustrate the experiences of middle-class Taiwanese American women. The book examines how immigration creates specific gendered work and family contexts for these individuals as they navigate the social and psychological effects of settlement. Many of the women studied immigrated as dependents when their U.S.-educated husbands secured professional jobs. Because they were constrained by dependent visas that prevented them from working outside the home, these women had to find new ways to negotiate their identities. This study provides a deep look at how these women resist and adapt to the processes of immigration and the changing dynamics of their new lives in the United States.
