Description

This readable book presents a new general theoretical understanding of politeness, offering an account of a wide range of politeness phenomena in English illustrated by hundreds of examples of actual language use taken largely from authentic British and American sources. Building on his earlier pioneering work on politeness, Geoffrey Leech takes a pragmatic approach based on the notion that politeness is communicative altruism. Leech's 1983 book, Principles of Pragmatics, introduced the now widely-accepted distinction between pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic aspects, which continues to shape contemporary linguistic theory and practice.

Key Features

The Pragmatics of Politeness provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding politeness across diverse communicative contexts and language varieties.

Oxford University Press presents hundreds of authentic examples drawn from British and American English sources to illustrate real-world politeness phenomena.

Geoffrey Leech's pragmatic approach establishes politeness as communicative altruism, offering a fresh perspective on how speakers navigate social interaction.

This Oxford Studies in Sociolinguistics title builds upon Leech's pioneering Principles of Pragmatics, which established the pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic distinction widely used in modern linguistics.
