Description

This scholarly volume from Bloomsbury's Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies explores the pilgrimage structure underlying the book of Exodus in its priestly redaction. Smith's analysis begins with an examination of pilgrimage shrines, feasts and practices in ancient Israel, providing essential context for understanding the text. The work then traces two distinct pilgrimage journeys within Exodus: Moses's journey to Mount Sinai in chapters 1-15, where he encounters God and receives his commission, and the subsequent journey of Moses and the people together in chapters 16-40, which leads to the people's own experience of God and their receiving of commission. Central to this interpretation is Exodus 15, identified as the fulcrum-point of the entire book, with verses 1-12 reflecting on the past and verses 13-18 anticipating Israel's future journey to Sinai. This detailed structural analysis reveals how pilgrimage functions as the organising principle throughout Exodus, offering readers a fresh perspective on one of the Bible's most foundational texts.

Key Features

The Pilgrimage Pattern in Exodus examines ancient Israeli pilgrimage shrines, feasts and practices to establish historical and religious context for understanding the narrative.

Smith traces two interconnected pilgrimage journeys in Exodus: Moses's solitary encounter with God at Mount Sinai and the people's collective journey that follows.

Exodus 15 serves as the structural fulcrum in this analysis, with its verses divided between retrospective reflection and forward-looking anticipation of Israel's pilgrimage.

Published by Sheffield Academic Press as part of Bloomsbury's Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies, offering scholarly depth for serious Bible students.

The book reveals how priestly redaction in Exodus employs pilgrimage as an underlying theological and narrative organising principle throughout the text.
