Description

Explore the history of Black education in the South through the lens of music. In the post-Civil War era, freedmen's schools faced extreme financial challenges while trying to establish educational foundations. To secure necessary operating capital, these schools turned to a unique fundraising method involving student musical troupes. This book details how student singers traveled to the North to perform Negro spirituals, the sacred songs of slavery, to build goodwill and attract financial support. Following the success of the Fisk University Jubilee Singers in 1871, this strategy became a model for HBCUs across the South. These intrepid student performers did more than raise funds; they introduced the world to the profound beauty of Negro spirituals. Part of the American Made Music Series, this work provides a look at how music served as a vital tool in the struggle for Black education and survival in the Southland.
