This scholarly work examines the history of Russian peasant bride theft spanning from the adoption of Christianity in Kievan Rus during the late tenth century through the early twentieth century. The book argues that bride theft in eighteenth and nineteenth century Russia was practised substantially by Old Believers, the schismatics who rejected the Church reforms of the mid-seventeenth century and avoided contact with the Orthodox Church. The study explores how bride theft often involved willing participants and secret midnight ceremonies conducted by Orthodox priests, offering fresh perspectives on marriage customs, social practices, and religious dissent in Russian history.
