Routledge Visualizing Jews Through the Ages - Routledge Cultural History

This comprehensive volume explores literary and material representations of Jews, Jewishness and Judaism spanning from antiquity to the twenty-first century. Gathering leading scholars from the field of Jewish Studies, the book investigates how debates surrounding literary and material images within Judaism and Jewish life function as part of an ongoing strategy of image management - the conscious and unconscious effort to shape, direct, authorise and contain Jewish literary and material images and encounters with those images across multifarious arenas of Jewish life from the early modern period onward. The collection provides critical insights into how Jewishness and Judaism have been visually and textually represented, constructed and contested throughout history, offering readers a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between representation, identity and cultural authority within Jewish communities and in broader historical contexts.
