Description

This Routledge volume examines the profound impact of German and Austrian psychoanalyst emigration to London on British psychoanalytic thought and practice. Following on from earlier scholarship, the book traces the consequences of this diaspora within the framework of the British Psycho-Analytical Society's Controversial Discussions, a pivotal period that reshaped the field. The first section, Tradition and Change, explores how these emigrating analysts influenced established British psychoanalytic traditions whilst introducing new perspectives and methodologies. By documenting this historical migration and its theoretical repercussions, the work provides essential context for understanding modern psychoanalytic schools of thought, particularly Kleinian approaches that emerged during this transformative era. Scholars, practising psychoanalysts, and students of psychology will find valuable insights into how institutional dialogue and cultural exchange shaped contemporary psychoanalytic practice.
