Description

The Matter of Zen offers a focused examination of zazen, the foundational meditation practice at the heart of Zen Buddhism. Originally published in 1964, this Routledge volume addresses a critical gap in Western Zen discourse by centering attention on zazen itself rather than broader philosophical concepts. The author argues that zazen-the specific meditation technique practised seriously in Japan-has been largely overlooked in contemporary interest surrounding Zen Buddhism. This scholarly work provides readers with a clear, accessible account of what zazen actually is and why its practice remains essential to authentic Zen tradition. Whether you are a student of Buddhism, a meditation practitioner seeking deeper understanding, or someone curious about Eastern philosophical traditions, this book cuts through popular misconceptions to reveal the practical core of Zen Buddhist teaching. The Routledge Library Editions reprint brings this important historical text back into circulation, making it available to modern audiences interested in the genuine practice and philosophy of Zen.
