Description

Explore the history of early modern transatlantic migration through the story of the Agata, a Dutch frigate. In 1747, Spanish merchants hired this vessel to travel between Cadiz and Veracruz, carrying migrants from across Europe. This historical account examines the lives of those on board, including passengers and the crew who worked on the ship. Because the Agata was intercepted by British privateers on its return trip, many original documents and personal letters were preserved. This microhistory uses those records to examine the human experiences of people moving across the Atlantic during this era.
