Description

This ethnography examines the lived experiences of migrants traversing the Balkan route and the responses of local communities witnessing their journey toward the European Union. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in North Macedonia and Serbia, the book critically analyses the refugee crisis and its aftermath, revealing how a new border regime emerged based on permanent legal suspension, normalised violence, and the entrapment of migrants in liminal spaces-caught between the gates of Europe, unable to advance or return. The work addresses the systemic barriers, humanitarian concerns, and geopolitical dimensions of migration through Southeast Europe, offering insights into how displacement reshapes both migrant trajectories and host communities. Essential reading for academics, researchers, and policy makers engaged with migration studies, EU border politics, civil rights, and the social consequences of contemporary displacement crises.
