Description

This scholarly examination explores how talking animals in nineteenth-century British children's literature reflected and shaped contemporary debates about humanity and the animal world. Tess Cosslett's reappraisal of canonical works including Black Beauty, Beautiful Joe, The Wind in the Willows, and Peter Rabbit demonstrates how authors used animal characters to engage with pressing intellectual questions of the era. The study applies diverse critical frameworks-from Bakhtinian carnival theory to feminist, postcolonial, and ecocritical perspectives-to illuminate how these stories constructed the child reader and challenged assumptions about authorship and literary possibility. Essential for scholars and students of children's literature history, this volume reveals the intellectual richness beneath what are often dismissed as simple tales, showing how animal fiction functioned as a vehicle for exploring complex nineteenth-century anxieties about nature, society, and childhood itself.
