Description

Explore the history of first-century Alexandria through this scholarly work from Routledge. Once a major center for international trade and shipping, Alexandria vied with Rome for status as the greatest city in the Roman empire. With over half a million people living in its cosmopolitan four square miles, it was a massive hub of activity. Because little remains of the city's golden age due to earthquakes, subsidence, and continuous rebuilding, much of what we know comes from limited papyrus records. This text uses the writings of Philo, an Alexandrian Jew, as a primary guide to reconstruct the life and atmosphere of this ancient metropolis. It provides a window into a lost era of history through the lens of one of its most significant inhabitants.
