Description

Explore how Andrew Carnegie's visionary philanthropy transformed public library architecture across Britain and America in this scholarly examination of transatlantic design standards. This Routledge publication traces Carnegie's profound influence on library planning during the first twenty years of his programme, when he funded nearly three thousand public buildings that fundamentally reshaped public provision on both sides of the Atlantic. Discover how Carnegie's standardised approach to library design predated Walter Gropius's later observations on standardisation by over five decades, establishing enduring architectural patterns that shaped communities. Written for architecture historians, heritage professionals, and students of design history, this work contextualises Carnegie's philanthropy within the broader development of international architectural standards and public space.
