Description

MUL.APIN stands as the most widely copied astronomical text from ancient Mesopotamia, compiled before the 8th century BC. This scholarly edition presents the complete work with an introductory essay contextualising the material, followed by a new critical edition of the original text. Facing-page transliteration and English translation make the content accessible to modern readers, whilst a detailed commentary provides expert analysis of the astronomical, calendrical and mathematical content. The compendium itself covers essential Mesopotamian astronomy: comprehensive star lists, descriptions of planetary phases, mathematical schemes for calculating day and night lengths, discussion of the luni-solar calendar system with intercalation rules, and a collection of celestial omens that guided ancient astronomical interpretation.
