Description

Metapsychology for Contemporary Psychoanalysis presents a comprehensive revision of psychoanalytic theory, moving beyond traditional Freudian drive-defence models to propose an information processing framework for understanding the mind. This scholarly work argues that self-knowledge represents the central human need, with drives reconceived as pathways toward this fundamental objective. Richard Sembera begins with rigorous analysis of Freud's original metapsychological writings, examining the persistent difficulties and contradictions that have complicated psychoanalytic thought. The book bridges classical psychoanalytic theory with contemporary understanding, offering clinical psychologists and psychodynamic psychotherapists a modernised theoretical foundation for practice and conceptualisation. Essential reading for practitioners seeking to ground their work in revised metapsychological principles.
