Description

Josh White: Society Blues tells the remarkable life story of one of blues music's most influential and versatile performers. Born in South Carolina, White rose from humble beginnings as a lead boy for travelling blind bluesmen to become a groundbreaking artist who introduced folk-blues to mass white audiences in the 1940s. This Routledge biography explores how White became the king of Cafe Society in New York, packing nightspots alongside legends like Billie Holiday whilst pioneering his distinctive blend of blues, folk, and social commentary. White's legacy extends far beyond music: he was famed for his powerful Civil Rights songs that earned him favour with the Roosevelts, his magnetic stage presence, and his historic achievements as the first black singer-guitarist to act in Hollywood films and star on Broadway. This comprehensive account captures both the artistic brilliance and the complex personal struggles that defined White's career, particularly his experience during the turbulent 1950s, offering readers an intimate portrait of a cultural icon who helped shape American music and civil rights history.
