Japanese Tree Burial examines a contemporary funerary practice that transforms how Japanese society honours the dead whilst rehabilitating damaged forestland. Created in 1999 by Zen Buddhist priest Chisaka Genpo, tree burial replaces traditional family gravestones with woodland cemeteries where cremated remains are interred beneath individually marked trees and wooden tablets bearing the deceased's name. This innovative disposal method reflects shifting attitudes towards kinship, household continuity and environmental stewardship in modern Japan. Part of the Japan Anthropology Workshop Series published by Routledge, this volume explores how tree burial serves as a highly-effective means of promoting forestland rehabilitation following post-war ecological damage.
