Description

Explore the deep-seated social and political divisions in Haiti through a unique academic lens. This book by Routledge examines the origins of the contemporary protest cry: "the children of Petion v. the children of Dessalines." While many historians view this conflict through the lens of racial tension between the mulatto elites and the African majority, this work offers a different perspective. Using a structurationist and phenomenological structuralism approach, the author looks at practical consciousness as defined by Haitian epistemology and Haitian/Vilokan Idealism. The text investigates how these metaphors are used today by the educated black grandon class and the middle-class bourgeoisie. It provides a scholarly look at the nature of identity and ideology in Haiti, moving beyond traditional racial explanations to understand the complex social structures that shape the nation's history and its people.
