Description

This scholarly work examines the unique transition from natural horn to valved horn in 19th-century Paris, drawing on primary sources including Conservatoire method books, performance accounts, and technological documentation. Unlike the swift adoption of valve technology by other brass instruments, the Paris Conservatoire's strong tradition of natural horn performance, celebrated for its distinctive colour palette and virtuoso techniques, created significant resistance to change. The book documents how this cultural and artistic preference fundamentally shaped the development and acceptance of horn valve technology in one of Europe's most influential musical centres. Ideal for musicologists, horn players, and historians studying brass instrument evolution and music pedagogy during this transformative period.

Key Features

Examines the Paris Conservatoire's unique response to valve horn technology from 1792 to 1903, contrasting it with adoption in other European countries.

Uses primary sources including Conservatoire method books and historical performance accounts to trace the natural horn to valved horn transition.

Explores how the natural horn's valued colour palette and established virtuoso traditions influenced resistance to technological change in Paris.

Documents the relationship between teaching practices and instrument technology advancement at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire.
