Routledge Gender, Speech, and Audience Reception in Early Modern England

This scholarly work examines how women navigated social expectations through speech in Early Modern England, introducing the concept of 'scenes of speech' to analyse interactions between speakers and their audiences. The book demonstrates that the regulation of women's behaviour involved dynamic exchanges where both speakers and audiences anticipated, interacted with, and responded to each other's expectations, actively shaping what counted as acceptable speech. By focusing on representations of women speakers and their audiences in these critical moments, the author reveals how women engaged in a reciprocal process of establishing and contesting boundaries around their public voice. This approach offers fresh insights into early modern theatre, literature, and gender studies, showing how women responded to prescribed behavioural norms through their speech practices and how audiences participated in defining those very boundaries.
