This monograph documents the excavation of the Austin Friary at Hull, Yorkshire, a Franciscan daughter-house founded in 1316/17 that survived until its surrender to the Crown on 10 March 1539. Located in the heart of medieval Old Town next to the market place, the friary was archaeologically investigated in 1994 and 1999 prior to site redevelopment. The excavations revealed substantial built structures and allowed reconstruction of over 70% of the entire precinct layout. Anaerobic waterlogged conditions at the site preserved artefacts exceptionally well, contributing significant findings to medieval monastic archaeology. Published by Routledge as part of The Society for Medieval Archaeology Monographs series, this first volume in a three-part publication presents the stratigraphic sequence and foundational data from these important investigations into Franciscan religious life and urban medieval history in Yorkshire.
