Description

This Royal Musical Association Monograph examines a pivotal yet overlooked work in Johannes Brahms's compositional development. Following Robert Schumann's 1853 recognition of the young composer's mastery, Brahms pursued intensive study and created the neo-baroque Sarabande and Gavotte, which scholars have not previously identified as a distinct work. Manuscript evidence and performance records reveal that Brahms and his contemporaries regarded these dances as a significant composition during the mid-1850s. The work achieved early public performances across major European cities including Gdansk, Vienna, Budapest and London, marking Brahms's international performance debut. This scholarly monograph provides comprehensive analysis of these dances, their historical context, and their role in understanding Brahms's compositional journey beyond his already-recognised mastery.
