Baroque Piety offers a detailed examination of religious culture and musical life in Leipzig during one of history's most transformative periods. Drawing on archival sources from Leipzig, Dresden and Halle, author Tanya Kevorkian reconstructs the spiritual and cultural contexts that shaped the city before and during J.S. Bach's residence there. The work reveals how high Baroque culture emerged through the interaction of traditional religious frameworks and significant cultural shifts that began after 1680. By analysing primary documents and historical records, Kevorkian demonstrates the complex relationship between Pietist theology, secular developments, and the flourishing musical practices that defined Leipzig's identity. This scholarly study provides musicians, historians and students of classical music with insight into how religious devotion, social structures and artistic expression intertwined during the late 17th and 18th centuries.
