Description

Explore a detailed historical study of the Yerevan Province during a transformative era. Published by Routledge as part of the Advances in Armenian Studies series, this book provides the first examination of the demography and social and economic conditions in the region during the first decade of the twentieth century. This work focuses on the period before the massive shifts caused by World War I and the subsequent seven decades of Soviet rule. While cities like Tiflis and Baku were hubs of political and intellectual activity, the Armenian inhabitants of the Yerevan Province were primarily peasants. This book investigates their specific role and life within the South Caucasus. Readers will gain a deep understanding of the economic structures and social realities of this specific population. By analyzing the conditions of the early 1900s, the text offers a unique perspective on how these communities functioned before the geopolitical changes that reshaped the region forever. It is an essential resource for students and historians interested in Armenian history and the socio-economic landscape of the late Imperial era.

Key Features

Provides the first examination of demography and social conditions in the Yerevan Province during the early 1900s.

Analyzes the economic and social landscape specifically before the impact of World War I and Soviet rule.

This volume looks at the issue of political affinity as a way of explaining industrial policies in Newly Industrialised Countries (NICs). Focusing on Brazil as one of the most technologically and economically advanced of the NICs, Roy Nelson looks at how political affinity can help - or hinder - industrial policies to promote the development of indigenous technological capabilities within NICs. He looks at the ways in which democratization can affect the abilities of these countries to make and implement effective policies for development. The book concludes with some observations on what kind of models for industrial development might be most appropriate in the light of the issues discussed. The discussion calls into question the prevailing emphasis of the democratization literature on continued top-down modes of government in post-transition regimes, particularly in Latin America. The volume may be of interest to scholars interested in development and democratization as well as to policy makers involved with NICs.

Part of the Routledge Advances in Armenian Studies series for academic and historical research.

Examines the distinction between the rural Yerevan Province and the more political centers of Tiflis and Baku.
