Description

An Historical Sketch of Bookbinding is a scholarly reprint from Routledge's comprehensive series on the history of bookbinding technique and design. Originally written as an introduction to the 1891 Burlington Fine Arts Club Exhibition of Bindings catalogue, this volume traces the evolution of bookbinding as both craft and art form. The book explores binding techniques, design principles, and aesthetic developments across centuries of practice. An extensive appendix provides detailed documentation of embroidered covers, metal ornaments, and decorative book-edge techniques, sourced from the Magazine of Art. This reprint preserves an important historical perspective on how bookbinding evolved from utilitarian craft to refined artistic discipline, making it essential for scholars, designers, conservators, and anyone studying the technical and aesthetic history of book arts.
