Description

An Empire of Elites investigates how the senatorial aristocracy represented themselves during the fourth century AD. As part of the Routledge Research in Byzantine Studies series, this work examines epigraphic evidence to reveal the cultural, social, and political dynamics of the Later Roman Empire. By analyzing aristocratic inscriptions and materiality, the study looks at the self-image of the empire's highest-ranking social strata. The research uses art identified as senatorial and contextualizes these findings within contemporary literature to place the elite identity within the broader framework of fourth-century imperial society. This academic study offers a deep look into the hierarchy and ideological presence of the Roman senatorial order.
