Description

Rome: 10 presents a curated collection of solo motets spanning the seventeenth century, from 1621 to 1695, making available for the first time many rich sources of Italian sacred music. Following the groundbreaking solo voice introduction in church music with Lodovico da Viadana's Cento concerti ecclesiastici in 1602, this series traces the parallel development of solo song within the sacred tradition. The collection features works by major composers including Maurizio Cazzati, Bonifazio Graziani, and Isabella Leonarda, each represented by multiple compositions that showcase the depth and sophistication of seventeenth-century Italian sacred vocal writing. These motets originate from both major cultural centres and provincial towns across Italy, reflecting the geographic breadth of musical practice during this pivotal period. This Routledge publication provides scholars and performers with essential access to a significant yet underrepresented body of sacred music that shaped the evolution of the solo motet tradition.
