Description

Translated fiction has long remained under-theorised in literary studies, often dismissed as secondary to foreign originals despite widespread readership. This Routledge volume challenges that assumption by demonstrating that translated novels occupy a distinct and valuable position within literary culture. Rather than viewing translated works as inferior copies, this book argues they function as independent creations shaped by the interplay of two languages, two cultures and two literary systems. The study examines how Chinese readers engage with translated fiction, exploring the reception practices and interpretive frameworks that distinguish reading experiences across linguistic and cultural boundaries. By repositioning translated novels within serious literary scholarship, this work offers fresh perspectives on how fiction travels, transforms and resonates when crossing national and linguistic borders, ultimately enriching our understanding of global literary circulation and the role of translation in shaping literary value and meaning.

Key Features

Challenges the traditional view of translated novels as secondary versions by arguing they are distinct creative works shaped by dual linguistic and cultural contexts.

Examines reader reception and engagement with translated fiction in Chinese literary culture, revealing how audiences interpret works across linguistic boundaries.

Integrates literary systems theory to explore how translated novels function differently from both their originals and non-translated works within specific cultural contexts.

Provides theoretical frameworks for reconsidering translated fiction as worthy subjects of serious scholarly attention rather than peripheral to literary studies.

Demonstrates how translation creates new models of reality that emerge from the dynamic tension between source and target languages and cultures.
