Description

The Uttarakanda concludes the monumental Ramayana of Valmiki with the dramatic events of King Rama's reign, opening with the history of the demonic raksasas race and the violent career of Rama's foe Ravana. This final volume recounts Rama's discharge of his war allies following the great conflict at Lanka and his reunion with his wife Sita, before exploring the darker consequences as Rama confronts scandal over Sita's captivity under the lustful Ravana and makes the agonizing decision to banish her. Published by Princeton University Press as part of the Princeton Library of Asian Translations, this scholarly edition provides readers with access to one of ancient India's most influential literary works, offering both narrative depth and cultural significance to students and enthusiasts of classical Indian literature and epic poetry.

Key Features

The Ramayana of Valmiki Volume VII completes the seven-book epic cycle with the Uttarakanda, the final book depicting Rama's reign and its tragic consequences.

This edition is published by Princeton University Press as part of the established Princeton Library of Asian Translations series for academic and general readers.

The Uttarakanda opens with detailed accounts of the raksasas demonic race and the career of Ravana, providing mythological context for the epic's conclusion.

King Rama's grateful discharge of his allies and romantic reunion with Sita form central narratives before the volume explores themes of duty, scandal, and exile.
