Description

Explore the poetics of Philodemus of Gadara with this scholarly study from Oxford University Press. This book examines the work of the first century BCE Epicurean philosopher and poet through his surviving fragments found in the Herculaneum papyri. While his treatise On Poems was primarily polemical, this text recovers his views by analyzing his debates and core Epicurean commitments. The study focuses on his central critical principle: the inseparable relationship between form and content. By examining how these two elements mutually reinforce one another, readers gain insight into how the poet uses this marriage to create meaningful work. This is an essential resource for those studying classical poetry, ancient philosophy, and the history of literary criticism.
