This Oxford Historical Monograph examines the political landscape of fifteenth-century England from 1413 to 1471. While many political histories focus on the relationship between the Crown and aristocratic landholders, this study addresses the growing importance of the urban sector in an urbanizing society following the Black Death. Beyond the traditional focus on landholders, this work explores how towns served as locations where power was asserted and where financial and military resources were concentrated. It provides a necessary perspective on the role of English towns, which were generally smaller than those in Flanders or Italy, but remained central to the social and political development of the era.
