Description

On the Parish? is a scholarly study of the negotiations surrounding the allocation of poor relief in rural English communities from 1550 to 1750. This work from Oxford University Press examines the relationships between different support systems used by the laboring poor. The book analyzes how the laboring classes attempted to survive through informal support networks. It also looks at the expanding range of endowed charity encouraged by late sixteenth-century statutes for charitable uses. Additionally, the text explores the developing system of parish relief that was coordinated under the Elizabethan poor laws. Based on exhaustive research in trustee archives, this volume provides a detailed look at the social history of rural England during this period.
