Description

Explore a vital piece of ecclesiastical history with Sophronius of Jerusalem & 7th Century Heresy. Part of the Oxford Early Christian Texts series, this volume provides access to the Synodical Letter and other essential documents from a figure who shaped the religious landscape of the sixth and seventh centuries. Sophronius was a multifaceted leader, serving as a poet, hagiographer, dogmatician, and liturgist. As a widely-travelled monastic with strong ties to the see of Rome, he possessed an unmatched understanding of anti-Chalcedonian churches. This collection highlights his influence during periods of significant religious tension in both the East and West. This edition includes his famous Synodical Letter, which he dispatched upon becoming patriarch of Jerusalem in AD 634. This specific epistle holds immense historical weight, having been read at the Sixth Ecumenical Council in 680-1. For students of church history and early Christian studies, this work offers a direct window into the theological debates and leadership of a transformative era.
