Description

Explore a rare historical archive in Moving Images: John Layard, Fieldwork and Photography on Malakula Since 1914. This book brings to life the early days of British social anthropology through the work of Cambridge anthropologist John Layard. During his intensive fieldwork in Malakula, New Hebrides (Vanuatu) between 1914 and 1915, Layard worked closely with local assistants to document customary lives through detailed notes and photography. Published by University of Hawaii Press, this volume features over 300 evocative images sourced from Layard's original collection of glass plate negatives and objects. Many of these images were previously unpublished, offering a unique look at the people and culture of Vanuatu from over a century ago. This collection provides a visual record of one of the earliest periods of solitary fieldwork in the discipline of anthropology.
