Description

Magical Medicine explores the hidden world of folk healing practices, magical remedies, and ritualistic medicine that persisted throughout twentieth-century Europe and America. Professor Hand's remarkable collection reveals hundreds of documented examples of magical medicine beliefs and customs that shaped how ordinary people understood health and healing. From unconventional remedies involving body parts and herbs gathered according to specific rituals, to symbolic healing practices tied to folk superstition, this work demonstrates how fantasy and imagination continued to influence medical thinking among common populations far more than modern observers typically acknowledge. The book draws from extensive research into the folkloric component of medicine, examining the gap between scientific medicine and the folk belief systems that governed actual healing practices. This scholarly work offers genuine insight into how people conceptualised wellness, illness, and treatment through the lens of cultural tradition, magic, and inherited custom rather than clinical science.
