Description

This scholarly work examines how Japanese intellectuals constructed and promoted theories of Pan-Asian empire during Japan's military expansion from 1931 to 1945. As Japan invaded China and engaged in full-scale conflict with the United States in the late 1930s and early 1940s, influential social scientists including R yama Masamichi, Kada Tetsuji, Ezawa J ji, Takata Yasuma, and Shinmei Masamichi developed competing visions of a new Asian order. These intellectuals crafted highly politicized frameworks designed to encourage wartime collaboration and mobilisation across occupied territories and colonial possessions. The book explores how these theoretical constructs shaped actual imperial practices and wartime policy, offering insight into the ideological justifications underlying Japan's regional expansion. Part of the Routledge Studies in the Modern History of Asia series, this work contributes to understanding the intellectual history of twentieth-century Asia and the complex relationship between academic thought and imperial ambition during this transformative period.
