Description

Incommunicable: Toward Communicative Justice in Health and Medicine offers a deep look into the complexities of medical discourse. Author Charles L. Briggs challenges the idea that health communication moves easily across racial, geographic, and class lines. By connecting linguistic and medical anthropology with Black and decolonial theory, this work introduces the concept of incommunicability. This concept explains how communication failures impact the experiences of patients, doctors, and healthcare providers alike. This book provides a scholarly perspective on how cultural models of health and communication function. Briggs draws on the profound insights of W. E. B. Du Bois and the work of three philosopher-physicians: John Locke, Frantz Fanon, and Georges Canguilhem. It is a necessary read for those studying the social sciences, medical anthropology, and the systemic structures of healthcare. Through this lens, the text explores how communication gaps shape the medical landscape and what it means to seek communicative justice in modern medicine.
