FANTAGRAPHICS Thimble Theatre & Pre-Popeye Comics Collection

Discover the origins of a legend with this revised and expanded edition of the Eisner-Award nominated classic collection. Before creating the world's most famous cartoon sailor, E.C. Segar worked on silent movie theater slides, the Charlie Chaplin comic strip, and a daily strip about Chicago entertainment. This volume traces his journey from his early career in the movies to the 1919 launch of his own newspaper creation, Thimble Theatre. This comprehensive collection includes a new 4-page, all Segar Sunday section, offering a deep look at the work that paved the way for Popeye's debut a decade later. It is an essential volume for fans of comic history and the early works of Elzie Crisler Segar.
