This volume from the De Gruyter series, Ausgaben deutscher Literatur des 15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts (185), focuses on the collected works of Christian Weise. As the fourteenth volume of his complete works, it provides essential editions of two early plays and one late piece. Included in this edition are "Die Triumphirende Keuschheit" (1668) and "Die Beschutzte Unschuld" (1673). These works represent the period before Weise reformed early modern school theater during his time as Rector of the Zittau Gymnasium. While the conflicts in these plays are less complex and the character ensembles are more manageable than his later works, they already display the mixture of genre elements and stylistic levels that would define his later dramatic writing.
